One Month Review of Pritunl VPN Server

Still using my free Pritunl VPN server with a $5/month Digital Ocean droplet, and the speed and reliability are still amazing. So, after a year and a half, I can honestly say this is the best VPN solution I have ever used.

Free Pritunl VPN Server Review After One Month of Use

Not long ago, I published a post on how to set up your own free VPN server using Pritunl. Since I have been using the new Pritunl server for about a month now, I thought it might be a good idea to post about my experiences with it.

Overall, it rocks! It is stable, fast and just works! I just connect, enter my secret pin number and I am surfing from a Digital Ocean server thousands of miles away. I can access Hulu, Netflix and any other video site you can name. And since I have my own dedicated IP address, the VPN-unfriendly video sites are none the wiser.

The Digital Ocean server costs me only $5 per month. So, I don’t think there is a better VPN deal out there right now. I mean, sure there are VPN services that offer a slightly lower rate, but none of them include a dedicated IP for those low prices. To get a dedicated IP address, you have to shell out at least a few bucks extra.

Performance wise, I am totally satisfied with my free Pritunl VPN server. I am getting great download/streaming rates that are usually about 98% of my native connection (and even faster than my standard connection in some cases,) and my upload speeds are better than when I connect without using the VPN. So, as far as performance is concerned, I don’t really think I could ask for more.

While the performance of the Pritunl VPN server is fantastic, it’s the reliability that impresses me most. I can leave the VPN connected for many hours or days and never suffer a single disconnect. I have never experienced that type of stability and reliability with any VPN service I have ever used – I mean, never, ever, ever!

In the past, whenever I put my PC in Hibernate/Sleep mode while my VPN client was connected, the service would disconnect or throw an error when I woke up my machine. With the Pritunl server, though, this never happens. The network reconnects to the Internet, and the VPN connection picks up where it left off; no need to reconnect or anything.

I suppose that the bottom line is that I really can’t find anything I don’t like about the Pritunl VPN server. It’s stable, secure and fast, and best of all it’s free. The only thing you need to pay for is hosting, which you can find dirt cheap if you shop around even just a little.

So, if you’re looking for a great alternative to pricier VPN services that give you no joy with Hulu, Netflix or other video streaming services. Consider creating a virtual server at Digital Ocean and installing Pritunl. You’ll have tons more control over your VPN connection and probably save a few bucks in the process. That’s all for now. Until next time…
